Standout Designs is a family-owned American small business with roots three generations deep in the television cabinet business. For nearly 60 years, our earlier family company served the cabinet needs of TV manufacturers, from Dumont and Symphonic in the 1940's and 1950's to Sony and Toshiba in the 2000's. Since 2006, Standout Designs has provided high-quality wood audio-video furniture direct to customers throughout the continental USA and Canada.
You might say that Standout Designs goes against the grain of the AV furniture market. First, most of our wood cabinet parts are made from actual lumber, not veneer on engineered woods like particleboard or medium density fiberboard (MDF). Born and raised in Charlotte, North Carolina, artist Johnnie Floyd knew as a youth that working with his hands would become a lifelong pursuit. His cultivated talent was eventually rewarded with a scholarship to the prestigious Columbus College of Art and Design in Columbus, Ohio, one of the premier art institutions in the country, and it was here that Johnnie was able to bring his two greatest passions, design and fabrication, together in the field of Industrial Design.
Floyd returned to his childhood home to apply his artistic and mechanical abilities to the cause of another passion: auto racing. For the last 15 years Johnnie has been honing his skills in this area. Johnnie lives on Lake Norman with his family in the great state of North Carolina.

Jason M. Milks: The Motivated Entrepreneur

He had a lot of good times growing up in Buffalo, NY. Taking his college career seriously he received a degree in Business with a focus on Marketing. Deciding to leave his hockey and skiing life behind he moved to Charlotte, NC and with some luck, and a willingness to work he landed a job with a race team. While there for nearly 10 years he worked his way up the corporate ladder.
Jason will tell you his work ethic came from his Grandfathers who both started and grew successful businesses. His dream was to start his own business some day and as these things go, he met the right people at the right time and The Steel Appeal was born. The Steel Appeal is a product of not one or two people's efforts, but the efforts of many, this is something Jason is so appreciative of and is what he has enjoyed most about The Steel Appeal's beginnings.

The Stoneybrook Story
The Stoneybrook Clock Company was founded in the late 1960's by Grant Bucane. Production began in a basement workshop in a home in North Prairie, Wisconsin. The little family business quickly outgrew its family location and moved into a small industrial park in Dousman, Wisconsin, where it produced clocks until the early 1980's. Owing to a tragedy in the family, the business ceded its operation.
The Stoneybrook Company owed its success to a passion for quality coupled with the knowledge of how to build superb clock cases. Their work exemplified what American craftsmanship is capable of while utilizing only very basic woodworking equipment. During these early years the Stoneybrook Company produced an estimated 40 different wall, mantel and grandfather clock styles as well as custom clocks at the request of its customers.
Today in the same tradition of this fine clock company the new owners, Earl and Gloria Hawkins of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, are attempting to revitalize and recreate the glory of fine American clock making. With that in mind, each Stoneybrook clock that is produced embodies the company's goal of providing one with a timeless treasure that captures the very essence of time and beauty.
