If you travel north from New York City to Washington County, you will come to a charming, rural area in the foothills of the Adirondack Mountains. Here, nestled between dairy farms and back country roads is Fiddler's Elbow?. More than three decades ago, John Gunther started the silk-screening company with a handful of workers in an old barn that once housed 10,000 chickens. Now we are celebrating our 38th year in business.

He conceived the idea in 1973 after a visit to the Museum of the City of New York, where he viewed an exhibition of 19th century cloth toys intricately printed using an antiquated process of hand engraved copper rollers. John's mission was to revive this art form using modern silk-screening techniques. This proved to be challenging, as there was no one experienced in full color textile printing, no school to consult. Fiddler's Elbow developed the process the hard way, through constant experimentation and soon became the best reproduction silk-screen printer in the country.

Thirty eight years later, we are still a family operated design and manufacturing company dedicated to producing well Made in the USA Hand Printed Gifts. Our product line has shifted from cloth storybook characters under the banner of The Toy Works?, to gifts and home d?cor which necessitated a change of name to Fiddler's Elbow.

We continue to manufacture at our facilities in Middle Falls, New York and offer products that are functional, decorative, reasonably priced and delivered in a timely fashion. Our designs universally appeal to the art, pet and nature lover. We hope that you enjoy our products as much as we enjoy designing and making them for you and welcome the opportunity to become one of your preferred suppliers.

In 1905, Einstein published his first paper on the theory of relativity making famous the equation E=MC2, Orville and Wilber Wright completed their first flight lasting more than thirty minutes, Claude Debussy composed Claire de Lune, and Henry Alfred Framburg started H. A. Framburg and Company in Chicago, Illinois.

Teddy Roosevelt was President and Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr. was on the Supreme Court. Automobiles were slowly replacing the horse and buggy and would become ubiquitous a few years later when mass produced vehicles like the Model T were introduced. Chicago was one of the fastest growing metropolises in the world and reflected the extremes, both good and bad, of the rough individualistic style of American capitalism and society.

The seeds of revolution were sprouting in Russia and social justice movements like labor and suffrage were gaining momentum in the United States.

Electricity was replacing gas as an illuminating energy source. Light fixtures often used a combination of gas and electricity. Bamboo was the material in early bulb filaments and would later be replaced by carbon filaments. But it wasn't until the tungsten filament was perfected a few years later that electricity was able to supplant all other forms of artificial light.

Many changes have occurred since 1905 ? social, economic, political, and cultural. But some things haven't changed. Framburg is still producing the highest quality commercial grade and residential lighting fixtures. And each Framburg is designed and handcrafted in the United States of America.

This picture was taken at a Chicago Lighting Fixture Association dinner in 1914 at the Hotel Sherman. The arrow in the center points to Henry Alfred Framburg. In the beginning, Framburg was mostly a regional company.
This photo was taken in our metal working department in 2004. Today Framburg sells and ships throughout the world and supports over one hundred families.

During the 1920's Framburg was solidifying its reputation for high quality, commercial grade lighting fixtures. The photo above is an example from our 1925 catalog. Notice the all cast construction and intricate detail. Some pieces in our product line have been produced for over 50 years - a testament to their timeless style and enduring quality. The picture above from our Yorkshire Collection is an example. Notice how the glass is bent in two radii and the seams are bound to create a clean and structurally sound attachment of the glass panels.

Some of our designs, such as the one shown above, are exact reproductions of period lighting. This fixture is from our Chancery Collection and replicates the Victorian gas light fixtures from the 1800's. Throught our product line you will find several designs that utilize iconographic images that have profound symbolic meaning derived from myth and legend. This gargoyle-adorned lantern above is from our Carcassonne Collection.

From formal to casual, gothic to contemporary, and rustic to refined, Framburg handcrafts one of the broadest product
lines. The Syzygy (left) and Vienna (right) evidence this
breath of design. Often we seek to capture the essence of a genre or design philosophy without being confined by its methods or materials. From our Fin de Siecle Collection, the chandelier above is inspired by the organic elements of Art Nouveau styling.

During World War II Framburg manufactured ship recognition models to train our forces to be able to recognize Allied versus Axis ships. These models were made in 1:500 and 1:1200 scale and are remarkably detailed and durable. In fact, they are collector's items and a full set can sell for $10,000.

Guessing by the age of the automobiles, this picture of our previous facility on Carroll Avenue in Chicago was taken in the late 1920's or early 1930's. The above picture, circa 1935, shows the interior of our previous facility. Notice the shafts on the ceiling that used belts to power the machines on the floor. Framburg's reputation for quality and financial conservatism allowed it to survive these difficult economic times.

Today Framburg manufactures all of its product in a 75,000 square foot facility in Bellwood, Illinois (a suburb of Chicago). This photo was taken in our assembly department in 2004.

Each Framburg fixture is the beneficiary of refinements in metal forming, finishing, design, and engineering techniques that have been refined through the generations. Not long ago designs were rendered painstakingly by hand such as the custom fixture above. Today, Framburg designs are modeled on a computer and are the distillation of countless iterations that allow us to achieve superior form, proportion and scale.

Bob Henninger comes from four generations of Pennsylvania soapmakers, all dedicated to perfecting the art of handmade soaps. Some of the old family recipes are still in use today at Friendly Fumes, in the small batches we lovingly pour in our kitchens, nestled in quiet, rural Montgomery County.
Growing up around soapmaking inspired Bob's lifelong passion for fragrance. In 1992, he began developing this passion in earnest, studying the art of blending fragrances and perfumes for use in his handmade soaps. Friendly Fumes was born! We now offer nearly 300 fragrances that make our handmade soaps, soy soaps and soy candles truly unique, and a joy to experience.
Learning about the remarkable, clean burning qualities of soy wax, and the nutritive benefits soy provides skin, led Friendly Fumes to branch out. After experimentation, we hit upon recipes that far surpassed any soy soaps we'd seen. Our special blend of castor oil and olive oil resulted in luxurious handmade soaps with a rich lather, something we noticed was lacking in similar products. It also lasted a long time, even with regular use.
Soy is now a main ingredient in a wide range of our products, including soy soaps, soy candles poured by hand, soy lotions and shower gels, and even soy products for men. Our other ingredients are the purest and most health-promoting we could find--shea butter full of natural essential fatty acids, olive oil chock full of antioxidants, healing castor oil and more. Exfoliants like oatmeal or ground lavender buds give some soaps a gentle scrub. We still use the cold process method, so our handmade soaps retain their natural glycerin. What you'll never find in a Friendly Fumes product is a harsh chemical or additive. No parabens, sulfates, solvents or phthalates--just pure indulgent goodness!
Why Soy?

All our products are made right here in Pennsylvania, USA. Bob himself proudly served in the U.S. Army 1st Infantry Division, 3rd Battalion, 28th Infantry Black Lions. Friendly Fumes stands for integrity, responsibility and compassion, and we incorporate those values in our lives, our company and our products.
We're glad you're here! Feel free to let us know what you think. Your comments or suggestions can only help us, since our goal is to serve you. Come on in, make yourself at home and stick your nose in our business!

Our goal as a furniture manufacturer is to make you, our customer, happy. Family owned and operated, we do things a little differently than the other guys. We start by believing that your furniture is truly an investment. You may choose to purchase a complete set, or collect a few pieces at a time.

To manufacture furniture that is better than anyone else's, we only make bedroom & living room furniture. It's amazing what highly experienced, skilled, and motivated craftsmen can do, when they only make a few products. They are experts because it's all they make.

Your furniture will be bench made, which means an individual craftsman works on each piece. With his signature on every piece he makes, he takes pride in creating something extraordinary.

When done properly, we believe furniture made in America is the best in the world! Our commitment to quality means that your furniture will always be MADE IN AMERICA!

Your furniture will be crafted from the best Oak money can buy: Northern Red Oak. This excellent hardwood brings to your furniture distinctive, tight grain patterns with beautiful, consistent color.

The combination of quality materials and superior construction methods come together to create an heirloom piece that will last for generations. But don't take our word for it, visit your local retailer and discover for yourself. Once you do, we're sure you'll want to become part of the growing Furniture Traditions' family of satisfied customers.

After living on the West Coast for several years, we turned our gaze to Texas when we designed and created the furniture for the renovation of the Hotel San Jose in Austin. We finally took the plunge and moved to Marfa in 2003.

After a few years of living in the high plains desert of the Trans-Pecos, we realized we were here to stay and started developing a product line inspired by our new surroundings.

By 2011 we had created our core group of designs that you see today ? The Saddle Leather Collection and Table Tops. We debuted these designs at Heath Ceramics' Los Angeles location in 2012 and haven't looked back since.
