Deep in an emerald valley, near a river that runs the wrong way, lives a tight-knit team of cyclists, engineers, designers, craftspeople, inventors and dreamers who share a vision.

A vision of a more healthy, connected, oil-indifferent world. A vision that sees the power inherent in every person, and the enormous potential that lies in a simple, elegant and wholly remarkable machine: The bicycle.

Like our river, we approach life a little differently. Compared to most manufacturers, our whole process runs backward, starting with you, the customer, and then building your bike to fit your body, your lifestyle and your riding style.

While the corporate world seems intent to out-source every element of manufacturing, we insist on building every Bike Friday right here in Eugene, Oregon. Where we can make adjustments and improvements continuously. Where we can accommodate almost any request. Where we can build your bike to the standards you expect and we demand.

It may not be the way most companies would do it. But it's the best way that we know to build the best bike we possibly can. A bike that performs like a beast. A bike that folds with aplomb. A bike that may actually be too much fun to ride. (Caution: You may get bugs in your teeth from grinning so wide.)

So come and meet our founders. Read their story and get acquainted with our entire team. Discover the world of Bike Friday, and watch the dream unfold.

Oh, yeah, the Willamette River is one of the few navigable rivers in the Northern Hemisphere that runs South to North its entire course.

A Bit of History

Brothers and Bike Friday co-founders Alan and Hanz Scholz come from a background deep in the bicycle lifestyle and filled with innovation. It is almost genetic.

From forming a bicycle club as kids to becoming expert bicycle mechanics over many years of practicing the art to incubating ideas until they grew into some of the most respected brands in the industry. They built their own durable bicycle wear, gave birth to the Burley Bike Trailer and honed their relentless drive toward innovation and improvement.

Bike Friday is an organic company in the truest sense of the word. Everything that Bike Friday represents today, the focus on community and relationships, the commitment to sustainability, the insistence on high performance and the unending push for bicycle improvements comes from a foundation that shouts We Love Bicycles!

But the proof is in the riding. And Bike Friday is only as good as the bikes we're building right now. So the innovation continues. But what do you expect? It's genetic. (Read Bike Friday evangelist Lynette Chaing's in-depth article on the history of Bike Friday here.)

Thank you for your interest in Brothers Rich!
Brothers Rich was an idea born of 3 siblings (my brothers Jim and John, and me) as a way to share our passions with others by collaborating to create a product of the highest quality and aesthetic appeal, inspired by ideas we each have dreamt up.

The first of these collaborations is a series of bikes highlighted on this site. I've designed and built each one and am excited to share their story with you. Here's how it all began:

I'm an Architect living and working in Baltimore Maryland, but my roots run deep in the south. I was born in Charleston SC and spent most of my life kicking around the Panhandle of Florida (foreshadowing to my latest bike, the Panhandle).
I commute to work on old Raleighs and in early 2013 I bought a vintage Raleigh Dl-1. I had been wanting to build up a Vintage road racer for years to blast around the streets of Baltimore. During my search I came across a stash of these old bikes just south of the city. It was then that I called my big brother John up. As the owner of a retail shop, Oakleaf & Acorn, I knew he'd be able to help sell the bikes as well as help shape the vision and design. I took a loan out, bought the frames and began the process of building up a bike that would eventually become The Charleston. Since then I've also enlisted the help of our father, hauling frames in his pick-up truck while up visiting. Truly a family affair!

Since buying that first Dl-1 I've put countless hours into building these bikes. Initially, I spent most of my weekends searching for quality components that would work with the vintage Raleigh frame, Beyond compatibility issues, modern components I did find were either really poorly made or very high end. There was no in-between. Now with The Charleston, Panhandle and many restoration projects well underway, there are no less hours spent on the painstaking process of building each of these, but there's also a lot of time getting the word out and meeting the people who have also fallen in love with them.

Please don't hesitate to contact me with any questions you have.

When we started Co-Motion Cycles in 1988 we gave a lot of thought to the name and purpose of our company. Co-Motion can mean a lot of things, but what our name means to us is the unique relationship between people and their bicycles: Our bicycles. We want to make this bond between you and your machine stronger. By designing and building bicycles of substance, we're working hard to help you develop that spirit of teamwork whether your Co-Motion is a tandem, road bike, travel or touring bike, or a custom Co-Motion built just for you.

In November 2000 we moved into the beautiful new building pictured below, designed specifically for the production of handmade bicycles. If you ever find yourself in our area, please give us a call and stop by the facility. We'd love to show you why we think ths is the best framebuilding shop in the country.

Celebrating 25 Years
Back in 1988 we didn't give much thought to the idea that we were starting a company that would be going strong in 25 years. In our mid 20's, we were less possessed by vision than with audacity. We knew we had some good ideas, and we had the audacity to try them. Although it didn't occur to us at the time, being able to work an exhausting schedule for no pay was about the only real asset we had to invest.

Looking back over Co-Motion Cycles' first 25 years, we feel truly honored to be entrusted to do what we love to do. Not only is it a privilege to create the bicycles that become part of our customers' lives, but also it is a real pleasure to see where our bicycles have taken you. Like proud parents, we feel like a part of us joins you on every journey your Co-Motion takes.

A cross-continental tour. A small child's first ride on a tandem with her mother builds the bond they share. A paralympic athlete's triumph. A young racer making it to the pro ranks. Disability disappears and freedom is reborn on the back of a tandem. Couples reconnecting by pedaling together. A new resolve to cycle to work every day. When injury, health or physiology makes bicycles unrideable, we make cycling possible with exceptional custom bicycles, bringing joy and freedom to new and renewed cyclists.

Thank you for browsing our website. We know there are many choices available and we hope to earn your business with our honest and quietly innovative approach to everything we do. If you ever find yourself in the area, please give us a call and stop by our facility. We'd love to show you why we believe we operate the best framebuilding shop staffed by the best people in the industry.

- Dwan Shepard and Dan Vrijmoet

A pair of skilled hands turns the handles of a custom-made bottom-bracket facing tool. Nearby, the sound of a single strap of emery cloth polishing and gently shaping a brazed joint can be heard. To the left, the slow pulsing flash of a carefully controlled TIG welder can be seen. A few steps away, mill and lathe operators execute the precision cuts that make our custom-drawn butted tubing into the integral parts of a Co-Motion bicycle frame. Just beyond, skilled artisans carefully take turns preparing each frame for paint, or painting in multiple stages in our world-class downdraft booth just beyond.

Craftsmanship- it's a work ethic and a philosophy that's often touted but seldom adhered to elsewhere. Producing the finest bicycles in the world isn't about automation. We believe craftsmanship defines the personal connection between our bicycles and ourselves. Our commitment to the hard work and to the details of making better bicycles is evident not only in our bicycles, but in the people who work here as well. A visit to Co-Motion Cycles illustrates our open and honest style. We take pride in what we do because we know we're doing it right.
