Over the past 90 years, the Mile High city of Denver, Colorado, has seen a number of fine chocolate and candy manufacturers come and go, but one special company is still very much in business.
On his first day of high school, a young man named Carl Hammond returned home and announced that he didn't need any more education. Fine, his mother replied, but you're not going to lie around the house. Go get a job. And that's just what Carl Hammond did, he got a job?as an apprentice in a candy factory.

Hammond's Story - Since 1920

In 1920, after several years of learning the candy business, Carl T. Hammond, Sr. founded Hammond's Candy Company in Denver. He was inspired to become an entrepreneur after creating his first original candy, Honey Ko Kos, chocolates topped with shredded coconut. In his first few years in business, Carl did it all: He developed the recipes, made the candy, sold the candy, and was his own office staff. Eventually, he hired someone to manage the store while traveled the West, selling his candy to other stores.

Business boomed during the Roaring 20s. While the Great Depression brought many changes, Hammond's went right on selling candy, because even in those extremely trying times, people could usually find enough money for the simple and sweet pleasure of candy?but if people were going to buy it, it had to be good. Carl's motto was Nothing is more important than quality. This focus on quality kept Hammond's modest factory on Platte River Street open, and making a profit, throughout the entire Depression.

In the 1930s, a friend of Carl's invented a delicious confection: A bite-sized, soft marshmallow surrounded by succulent caramel. Carl loved the product, and purchased the recipe to produce in his factory, naming it the Mitchell Sweet after his friend. The Mitchell Sweet became the signature candy in the Hammond's line, and this remains the case today.

In 1945, Carl's son, Carl T. (Tom) Hammond, Jr. and his wife June arrived in Denver, after Tom was discharged from the Navy at the end of World War II. Tom went from being Chief Petty Officer to apprentice candy maker. June soon learned the candy business and joined the family business.

In 1948, Hammond's Candy Company moved to a new Denver location, at Bryant Street and West 29th Avenue.

After Carl passed away, Tom took over the helm, and the business continued to flourish under his direction.

In 1967, Tom continued to expand factory operations, purchasing an enrober, a machine used to coat treats in chocolate. Each of Tom's four sons worked in the business at one time or another, but it was Robin, his only daughter, who chose the candy business as her career.

In 1983, Robin's husband, Emery Dorsey IV, joined the business and learned the art of candy making from Tom. When Tom passed away, Emery took over the management of the candy factory. With the help of his wife and mother-in-law, he carried on the Hammond's tradition of candymaking for another 16 years.

In 1995, Hammond's evolved from a local treasure to a national name, when Williams-Sonoma placed an order for hand-pulled lollipops, chocolate-covered toffee, and peppermint pillows, all of which quickly became best-sellers at the company's many retail locations around the country.

In 1999, Hammond's Candy was sold, and with the sale of the company came huge growth. Hammond's grew from a small factory with 10 employees, to a facility twice as large with over 60 employees. At this point, Hammond's also opened the factory to the public, offering free tours and an annual Candy Cane Festival, an event which is still held the first Saturday in December.

In 2004, Hammond's moved to its current location, a 35,000 square foot facility, just north of downtown Denver on Washington Street and 58th Avenue.

In 2007, a group of candy lovers led by Andrew Schuman, current President and CEO, took a close look at Hammond's. Schuman, using his specialty retail experience and an entrepreneurial zeal very similar to Carl Hammond himself, saw Hammond's as a sweet company, waiting to be taken to the next level and purchased the company. In just four short years, Hammond's has doubled in size and continues to thrive under the new ownership. It now utilizes the services of over 120 employees and welcomes over 100,000 visitors a year! As the company has grown, so has its fame: Hammond's has been featured on CNBC, in the Wall Street Journal, and in other national publications. Its products have been featured in magazines and advertisements, such as Martha Stewart Living and Every Day with Rachel Ray. The factory is frequently featured on television shows such as Food Network's Kid in a Candy Store. Orders now come in daily from such national companies as Whole Foods, Nordstrom's, Dean & Deluca, Cracker Barrel and hundreds of local and regional specialty shops across the world. Hammond's world-famous candy canes can be found in Canada, England, Spain, Italy, Dubai, Kuwait, Japan, Korea, Israel, and other areas around the world.

In 2010, Hammond's purchased McCraw's Candies, maker of that famous flat taffy you knew as a kid. McCraw's has been selling its world famous taffy for well over a century. McCraw's taffy is now manufactured and shipped from Hammond's Denver factory.

In 2011, Hammond's is thrilled to have entered the gourmet food arena with the launch of our succulent dessert dips and snack pretzels. We offer a huge variety for one small company, but (as Carl Hammond taught us) it's much more fun this way!

The Hebert legacy began in 1917 when a young Frederick Hebert purchased a copper kettle, knife, table, thermometer, and a slab of marble for the meager sum of $11. Over the next three decades Mr. Hebert tirelessly handcrafted chocolates and caramels in his own kitchen, selling his creations through small neighborhood stores in central Massachusetts. As demand for the rich flavor and velvety smooth texture of Hebert's chocolates grew rapidly throughout the region, Hebert looked to expand.

In 1946, Hebert purchased a Tudor Style mansion on Route 20 in Shrewsbury. The building, affectionately known as the Candy Mansion, became the first roadside retail confectionary operation in the United States and is still home to all Hebert operations today.

Always seeking the finest ingredients to perfect his recipes, Mr. Hebert introduced white chocolate to the United States in 1956 after tasting white coat candies while in Europe. White chocolate became mainstay in America as a result of Mr. Hebert's discovery.

Hebert has always thrived on its high-quality products. Throughout the second half of the century the company opened a dozen candy mansions in New England, securing the Hebert name as a regional favorite for men and woman, and boys and girls alike. The Hebert experience is universal: Everyone can enjoy great chocolates.

From humble beginnings to New England staple, Hebert is still committed to the same passion for handcrafted excellence that Frederick Hebert introduced nearly a century ago.

1946
The Herr Foods story began in 1946 when 21-year-old James Stauffer Herr bought a small potato chip company in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, for $1,750. In 1947, the business moved into a vacated tobacco shed on the Herr family farm. As he learned more about the business, Jim Herr developed new and better cooking processes and a delicious snack food became even better. As demand for Herr's? Potato Chips grew, so did the company.

In September 1946, Jim proposed to Mim after an annual farm show in West Lampeter. Five months later they were married in the Hershey family's house in Paradise.

1949
In the spring of 1949, Jim located a 3,600-square-foot bakery facility available for rent in the small town of West Willow, Pennsylvania. The bakery, along with an adjacent house, became workplace and home for Jim and his wife Mim.

1951
September of 1951 Herr's? experienced a major disaster. Late in the afternoon, on September 5th, Jim was headed home from his deliveries, and Mim was preparing the evening meal when the fire broke out in the plant. Although the equipment had been shut down for the day, cooking oil apparently had dropped onto a hot fire brick and burst into flames. The potato chip factory was devastated by the fire.

Mim packs chips in the early days of the business.
1952
With help from family, friends and the bank, the Herrs bought 37 acres and built a new 4,500 square-foot plant. Jim Herr equipped the new plant with the company's first automated cooker, an early example of the company's commitment to innovation and quality. From the beginning, Jim Herr adhered to his underlying business philosophy of providing quality products at competitive prices and backing them up with honesty and dependable service.

1956
By 1956, just ten years after its inception, Herr's? Potato Chips was well-established with an expanding customer base. To accommodate the growth, the company built a 7,000-square-foot warehouse for storage of its allied products.

1958
In 1958, after careful consideration, Herr's? began adding seasoning to the potato chips. The barbeque chip was the first flavored chip the company tried and it's still in production today. Over the years the company added a number of flavors, including Sour Cream and Onion, No-Salt, Old Bay (crab seasoning), Salt and Vinegar, Pizza, Red Hot, Slightly Salted, Pennsylvania Dutch, Dill, and Sour Cream and Cheddar.

1963
The early sixties were marked by changes in the social structure in America. During 1963 Herr's? underwent changes of its own. The company doubled in size by constructing a 21,000 square-foot production facility in a field behind the Herr family's house. The company then officially incorporated as Herr's Potato Chips, Inc. and began a generous profit-sharing program for its employees.

1964
In 1964, Herr's? embarked on a packaging venture that helped revolutionize the company's sales. For years, Herr's? chips were sold in wax paper bags for 5, 10, and 15 cents a bag, depending on size. Herr's? also offered a twin pack (two bags inside a larger cellophane package) at 49 cents. A packaging salesman convinced Jim to try selling chips in a 20-ounce cardboard barrel. The barrels resembled the popular, wax-lined ice cream cartons and could be assembled affordably on site. The sturdy barrels would prevent chips from breaking and protect them from light, which caused them to become stale.

1968
In 1968, the company operated 35 sales routes out of Nottingham and five from New Jersey. An additional 23,000 square-feet was added to the plant. The new space provided more room for cooking, packing, and potato storage. A year later, Herr's? added 8,000 square feet of new stock rooms.

1969
As the company expanded, Jim Herr's reputation as an exceptional businessman grew as well. In 1969 he was named Pennsylvania's Small Businessman of the Year by the U.S. Small Business Administration.

1974
In 1974, Herr's? took a bold step in packaging, switching from glassine to foil bags. (Foil prevented light penetration and kept chips fresh over a long period.) Although the changeover was difficult and expensive, and the additional cost for foil was significant, the company was convinced that consumers would prefer a product that stayed fresher longer.

1976
In 1976 America faced a serious oil shortage. Gasoline prices soared, and Herr's? was forced to reassess its delivery methods. One problem was clear: the shape of the King Style barrels created a packing problem for the salesmen. The purchase price for the barrels also had risen dramatically to nearly four times the cost when the barrels were introduced just ten years earlier. In 1977, Herr's? reluctantly discontinued the King Style barrel.

1976-1984
To keep in step with consumer demand, Herr's? began producing a number of new products: 1976 Cheese Curls, 1978 Popcorn, 1981 Pretzels, 1983 Corn products, such as corn and tortilla chips, 1984 Onion Rings.

1983
By the early eighties, waste disposal created a mounting problem for the rapidly growing company. At the same time, the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Resources was enforcing stricter waste disposal legislation. Jim Herr's search for a creative solution ended in his own backyard. Through the years, the company had purchased over 1,000 acres of farmland in the vicinity of the plant. In 1983, Jim negotiated a deal with a young couple to help him establish, on this land, the Herr Angus Farm.

1984
In the spring of 1984 the first load of 300 steers was delivered to the farm, and operations began. The cattle were fed potato peelings and rejected food products, mixed with traditional cattle feed. The farm manager worked with a nutritionist to develop the appropriate feeding mix and schedule for the cattle.Today, the farm produces wheat, soybean, corn and barley. Some of the crops are used as part of the mix in the cattle's diet, the rest are sold. Starch, removed from the waste water before irrigating, is sold for fine paper manufacturing.

1986
In 1986, Herr Foods enjoyed a period of solid growth and the construction of additional warehouse space in 1987 brought the total plant area to 212,000 square feet.

1988
In 1988, Herr's? decided to put more emphasis on exporting their products to various countries. Since then, international sales have grown, including a manufacturing licensee in Barbados, and the company continues to explore further opportunities.

1989
In 1989, the company constructed a 15,000-square-foot Visitors' Center adjacent to the plant. Every day tour guides lead visitors through the center and the plant. Tours begin in a 140-seat theater, where visitors are entertained and educated by a 27-minute film, featuring Jim Herr and Chipper? the Chipmunk, a puppet animated by Jim Henson Puppeteers.

1990-1999
Entering the decade of the nineties, Herr's? was distributing its products in eleven states. With a continued commitment to quality, more than 1,000 Herr's? employees ensured our state-of-the-art manufacturing processes produce great tasting snacks. We operated nearly 500 sales routes and 23 warehouse locations.

Despite living in a city focused on great tasting food and healthy living, san francisco's Kara Goldin was amazed that she couldn't find a delicious and refreshing drink for her or her family.

not one that didn't have any diet sweeteners, sugars or other functional stuff added to it, anyway.

so, since plain water didn't always quench that thirst for tasty refreshment, Kara created hint.

The idea behind hint is simple: Purified water + a splash of natural flavor

? no sugar

? no diet sweeteners

? no preservatives, additives or anything else that you can't pronounce

by taking nature's original refreshment as the main ingredient and enhancing it with just a splash of delicious natural flavor, hint is a refreshing alternative to sodas, juices and other sweetened drinks without the empty calories or diet sweeteners.

as one of the fastest growing beverages in the US, our drinkers now have a water that makes their mouth water.

hint. water made tasty.
