JAR SAUCES STARTED OUT AS A FUN HOBBY FOR JOEL, ANDY, AND ROY. THEY LOVED MAKING AND EXPERIMENTING WITH HOT SAUCE RECIPES. JOEL, ANDY, AND ROY WORKED TOGETHER IN WAUSAU,WI AND DISCOVERED THEY ALL HAD AN INTEREST IN HOT SAUCE AND DECIDED TO CRAFT A BATCH. THEY BOTTLED 5 GALLONS WORTH OF WHAT IS NOW KNOWN AS JAR FLAVOR SAUCE MILD.
THEY HANDED OUT SAMPLES AND RECEIVED POSITIVE FEEDBACK AND BEFORE THEY KNEW IT THEY WERE BACK CREATING ANOTHER BATCH, THIS TIME 30 GALLONS WORTH. THEY CONTINUED TO HAND OUT SAMPLES AND THE RAVE REVIEWS KEPT COMING. WITH THE DEMAND COMING IN, THEY PURSUED A SMALL BUSINESS LICENSE, FDA AND STATE FOOD VENDOR APPROVAL, AND A CERTIFIED KITCHEN WHERE THEY COULD PRODUCE. IN THE SPRING OF 2011, THEY WERE UP AND RUNNING AS AN LLC AND JOEL ANDY, AND ROY BECAME PARTNERS OF JAR PRODUCTS, LLC.

This Original Hard-Cider has been made on our family-owned farm in Flushing, Michigan for well over a hundred years. It was first pressed back in the 1850's. Not much as changed in the process since then. We use the same apples from the same orchards as my great-great grandfather did before the time of the Civil War. We are proud of that. It gives us a sense of history.
The cider has played an important role in the ongoing history of our farm. The sale of cider actually saved our farm during the Great Depression. And, during the Prohibition people came from far and wide for our Special Farm Cider.
We grow vegetables and fruits here at Almar, but our cider has kept us in business when times have gotten tough. Regretfully, it seems that history has a habit of repeating itself?
These past few years, many of our nation's orchards have closed their barn doors and orchard gateways as the influx of apple juice made from cheap concentrates arrive in the USA from China and South America. Some call it a sign of the times, and others seem to appreciate the bargain at the grocery store.

All I can say is that our Orchard Gate Gold is the real thing. It's not a made using or contains product. IT IS REAL CIDER. Pure, natural and uniquely flavorful. We grow, harvest, and press the apples right here on the farm. It is time-consuming, labor-intensive and worth every bit of what it takes to make it.
Our cider is not only natural, it is truly organic. It always has been. It's simply a fact of what we do - and how we do it. We use no insecticides in the farm orchards. Rather, I do what my grandfather did. I have a large flock of guinea fowl that wander about and eat the bugs. Fallen apples that have hit the ground are always a food source for pests, so I let my Berkshire pigs wander the orchard and eat the fallen apples. In a fast-paced, instant gratification society all this may seem a little old fashioned, or not cost-effective. But, we have a cider that is not like any other, and the idea of playing around with what makes that happen... well, it just ain't part of the plan

Few products have achieved the iconic status of PEEPS?, the yellow, chick-shaped marshmallow confection beloved by children and adults alike. But, as popular as PEEPS? has become, it is only one of the many delicious products produced by Just Born, an 87-year-old, family-owned confectionery company based in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.
The Just Born candy tradition actually began in 1910 when Sam Born emigrated to the U.S. from Russia. A candy maker by trade, Born used innovative technology to produce chocolate sprinkles, known as Jimmies, and the hard chocolate coating for ice cream bars. In 1916, Born invented a machine that mechanically inserted sticks into lollipops.
In 1923, Born opened a small candy-making and retail store in Brooklyn, New York. He marketed the freshness of his line of daily-made candy with a sign that declared, Just Born. Not long after opening the Brooklyn store, Born invited his brothers-in-law, Irv and Jack Shaffer, to join him in the business.
The company thrived in spite of the economic depression of the 1930s and, in 1932, moved its operations to an empty printing factory in Bethlehem, PA.
The company continued to grow, aided by several key acquisitions. In 1935, Just Born acquired the prestigious Maillard Corporation, well known for elegant hand-decorated chocolates, crystallized fruits, Venetian mints, jellies and the best bridge mix in the country.
In 1953, Just Born acquired the Rodda Candy Company of Lancaster, PA. Although Rodda was best known for its jelly beans, it also made a small line of marshmallow products that included a popular Easter Peep that was made by laboriously hand-squeezing marshmallow through pastry tubes.
Sam Born's son, Bob, who had joined the company in 1946, helped mechanize the marshmallow forming process and Just Born has become the world's largest manufacturer of novelty marshmallow treats.
Other popular products have been introduced over the years, including MIKE AND IKE? chewy fruit flavored candies in 1940, spicy, cinnamon-flavored HOT TAMALES? in 1950, TEENEE BEANEE? gourmet jelly beans in 1977, and sour ZOURS? in 1999.
Under the current leadership of Co-CEO's Ross Born and David Shaffer, Just Born acquired Goldenberg Candy Company, makers of PEANUT CHEWS? and CHEW-ETS?, in 2003. Today, Just Born products are exported to many world markets and the candy is available to more than 1.5 billion people worldwide.
