Farm Fresh Pecans

Harvested from Georgia orchards that have been in our family for over 65 years, our pecans are always hand selected and fresh shelled.

Whether you choose the simplicity of our raw pecans or indulge in one of our signature candied varieties, you'll taste the Schermer family difference.

From our farm to your front door, we take pride in our pecans from start to finish. We're fifth generation growers and third generation owners here at Schermer Pecans. We get lots of questions about how the Schermer and Wetherbee families became synonymous with Georgia pecans and simply put it's because our orchards date back to the first commercial plantings in America.

A lot of pride goes into the care of our trees. Our orchards are considered some of the finest, with our trees bearing yields in a class with the most expensive pecans grown in the world.

Throughout the history of See's Candies, Mary See has symbolized the old-fashioned virtues of homemade quality and friendly service. The spectacled, silver haired woman still smiles with pride from candy boxes shipped throughout the world, and her original recipes are savored by millions to this day.

When Charles See arrived in Los Angeles from Canada in 1921 to try his hand at the confection business, he decided that no image would better reflect the personality of his fledgling venture than that of his mother. Apart from using her recipes as a foundation, See knew that keeping things in the family was the only way to bring about the kind of lovingly crafted product he desired.

See along with his mother and his wife, Florence, opened the first See's Candies shop and kitchen on Western Avenue in Los Angeles in November of 1921. The sparkling clean, black and white shop was designed to resemble Mary See's home kitchen.
Benefiting from the wide acceptance of an unusually high quality candy, See's was able to grow steadily from that first shop in Los Angeles to twelve shops by the mid-1920's and thirty shops during the depression. By 1936, See's was able to expand to San Francisco.

Mary See died in 1939 at the age of 85, but the company's ability to adjust to changing times - without abandoning the passion for quality and service that Mary See represented - kept it going strong throughout the decades to come.

Following World War II, See's Candy Shops grew as California grew, and the See's family continued the tradition, opening up shops throughout the state. In the 50's, See's established itself with the new and growing phenomenon of shopping malls. See's customers continued to recognize the See's Candies product for its quality and taste, and continued to visit See's old-fashioned black and white shops, enjoying a visit to a time past where service was paramount.

In 1972, the See's family sold the company to Berkshire Hathaway Inc., presided over by Chairman Warren Buffett and Vice Chairman Charles Munger. Utilizing his philosophy of acquiring solid companies where he could follow his hands off policy, Warren Buffett installed Charles N. Huggins as President and CEO.
Charles Huggins dedicated himself to the continuance of the company he joined in 1951, guiding it with the old-fashioned values set by Charles See until his retirement at the end of 2005.

He is succeeded by current See's President and CEO, Brad Kinstler, a longtime Berkshire Hathaway team member.

Today, California's Famous Old Time Candies? are sold in over two hundred shops throughout the West, a true sign of their enduring popularity. And, to this day, Charles See's living motto, Quality Without Compromise? continues to guide the company.

The Sisters of St. Benedict came to Ferdinand, Indiana, in 1867 to fill a need and make a difference in the lives of local settlers. Through the years, our sisters have adapted to the needs of a changing world. Yet we continue to faithfully live the 1,500-year-old tradition of Benedictine life?we seek God together, pray daily, and share our lives and ministries with others.

The story of all Benedictines begins in sixth-century Italy. St. Benedict wrote his Rule for monks living in community and dedicated to prayer and work. Monasteries for men (and then women) were established, and monasticism spread throughout Europe. In 1852, the first Benedictine women arrived in the United States from St. Walburga Abbey in Eichst?tt, Germany. They settled in St. Marys, Pennsylvania, and soon established multiple foundations, including one at Erie, Pennsylvania. From Erie, sisters went to Covington, Kentucky, where they founded St. Walburg Monastery.

By 1867, the young Catholic settlement of Ferdinand, Indiana, needed teachers who could speak German. On August 20, 1867, four sisters arrived from St. Walburg ? Sisters Benedicta Berns, Xaveria Schroeder, Rose Chapelle, and Clara Vollmer. They began teaching at the Ferdinand parish school, and in 1870, they opened Academy Immaculate Conception (later renamed Marian Heights Academy), a boarding school for girls.

In 1871, our community became independent of St. Walburg Monastery, and Sister Benedicta Berns was elected the first prioress. The rapidly growing community soon needed a larger monastery. In 1886, 72 sisters moved into the quadrangle, a traditional monastic structure they built northeast of St. Ferdinand Parish.

Our teaching ministry expanded from the 1870s well into the 20th century. Eventually our sisters taught in more than 75 schools in 12 states and five countries. In 1914, the community established a training school for teachers, St. Benedict Normal College. Under the leadership of Mother Seraphine Kordes, our new church was constructed from 1915 to 1924.

The 20th century was a time of great expansion, but by the end, the Ferdinand Benedictines, like all religious communities, experienced declining numbers and corporate changes ? among them, the closing of St. Benedict College in 1970 and Marian Heights Academy in 2000. But with the losses have come growth, new life, and new opportunities.

In 1978, we opened Kordes Retreat Center to offer programs for spiritual renewal and personal growth, and to provide a place of peace and hospitality for outside groups. Today, Kordes is just one part of our multifaceted Spirituality Ministry.

Our community's success in consistently gaining new members has been documented in The Wall Street Journal, on ABC's Nightline, and in other media internationally. Religious communities from around the world have come to Ferdinand for annual vocations workshops, and members of our community have traveled to many nations providing consultation and guidance.

Today, Monastery Immaculate Conception stands as a tangible sign of our sisters' enduring faith, a presence of peace, and a beacon of hope for all God's people. Spanning three centuries, we continue to affirm the value of the monastic tradition and to believe in a dynamic future for religious life.

When I was growing up in West Texas, my uncle had a sticker on the back window of his Ford pick-up truck that read Made in Texas by Texans. While I came to believe that was probably not true, I have made every effort to make that slogan a reality through the procurement of ingredients on the menu. - Chef Stephan Pyles
