OUR HISTORY
Even pretzels have a historical background....legend has it that pretzels originated during medieval times in southern Europe, and were baked in monasteries and given to children as a reward for learning and reciting prayers.

Famous Tell City Pretzels originated over 100 years ago, in 1858, when Casper Gloor, master baker from Switzerland, settled in Tell City, Indiana as a member of the Swiss Colonization Society. Gloor soon became known for the fine pretzel he baked from a secret recipe that he brought from Switzerland.

Gloor never revealed his secret formula to anyone, but after his death in 1912, it passed to Alex Kessler who worked for Gloor for 17 years, becoming a master baker himself.

In turn, the secret recipe passed to Alex Kessler's two sons upon his death and on to future owners over time. Except for a short period when production ceased, the famous Tell City Pretzels have been hand twisted and baked in the old fashioned manner?in strict accordance with the centuries-old formula that was responsible for the fine quality and taste that established their wide spread acceptance.

On July 2nd, 2009, Brad and Sandy purchased the assets of the famous Tell City Pretzels. The fine quality, unique taste and unique krunch of the pretzels will be available again for all who were greatly disappointed when finding out that they could no longer enjoy this one of a kind pretzel. While people all over the world will be able to once again purchase the pretzel and observe the baking of the pretzels, the secret recipe will continue to remain secret!

The secret Adora? formula that has us craving calcium nationwide was developed by Thompson Brands, a chocolatier with a rich, celebrated heritage since 1879. We can all thank William Thompson, one of the earliest innovators in the American chocolate industry, for Adora's great taste. He founded W.H. Thompson Confectionary in Meriden, Connecticut over 133 years ago and, to this day, the company continues to be a manufacturer based entirely in the United States. From the intricately foil-wrapped chocolate bunnies that are a must-have on Easter morning, to the chocolate cigars that announce a baby's joyous arrival, his chocolates have had the ability to make any occasion sweeter.

After over a century of perfecting the art of chocolate moulding, the team at Thompson Brands believed chocolate offered more than just great taste. Enter Adora? - and the idea of craving your calcium! Adora Calcium Supplements were introduced to the world in 2006 in all-natural, premium milk and dark chocolate, and designed so that two delicious disks a day provide 100% of the Daily Value of calcium plus the addition of vitamin D3 for improved bone health and magnesium for optimal absorption. And, the proof is in the chocolate - as recent studies continue to report, adequate calcium and vitamin D throughout life, as part of a well-balanced diet, may reduce the risk of osteoporosis.

Gene and Lynn Mealhow, and their sons, have been producing Tiny But Mighty Popcorn? since the late 1990s. A third-generation family farmer and soil consultant by profession, Gene continues to consult with farmers regarding sustainable practices. He bought the popcorn business from Richard Kelty, whose family had farmed in Urbana, IA for several generations.

In the 1980s, when his father and uncle left farming, Gene started to look at the whole picture involving groundwater and chemicals. He joined a soil consulting firm, which advised farmers about soil nutrients and seed selection. One of Gene's first customers in the early 1990s was Richard Kelty, who brought Mealhow in to reduce his waste and increase his yield. The popcorn stalks were falling down and producing only 600 lbs per acre, which was not commercially viable. One of the early challenges was getting the three-inch long ears to fill to the tip.

Gene's first reaction when he encountered the tiny corn kernels was What in the world is this stuff? He began consulting with experts from around the United States, and discovered that the K&K kernel is most likely a variety of flint corn. The Kelty and Kramer families either found it growing in Iowa when they settled here in the 1850s, or they traded for it with local Indians. It may have even originated in the western states.

According to Richard Kelty, original owner of the company, his great, great, great-grandfather, Samuel Kelty, settled just northwest of what is now Cedar Rapids in the 1850s. While no one in his family knows exactly where the seed came from, they believe it came from Indian neighbors. When Richard Kelty returned home from the army in the mid-1970s, he found the last remaining seed in a fruit jar. He popped some and planted the rest?and a new business was born.

What makes Tiny But Mighty popcorn unique, besides its tiny kernels and disintegrating hulls, is that it is open pollinated. A 128-day corn, TBM is also difficult to raise, process, and keep its integrity. Gene consulted with a popcorn breeder from Idaho, who said TBM was a rare variety. Because it is hard to breed, most people in the popcorn industry wanted nothing to do with it.

For the Mealhows, popcorn is not just a business. It's their passion, and Tiny But Mighty Popcorn? is a product they do not want to die. One of their biggest pleasures is meeting customers, who range from friends to people throughout the United States. In fact, Gene doesn't like to use the word customer, instead, he builds friendships with people who enjoy his product. At a recent trade show in Chicago, Mealhow was thrilled to have a mother say to her kids, This is a real farmer, and he's from Iowa.

Our Story
My name is Jeff, and I am the co-founder of Topline Foods. My family grew up in a small farming community of LeSueur, MN. My Dad spent 30+ years with Green Giant as a quality control manager working in the fields with the farmers. Growing up in a small MN farming town, I learned the values of faith, hard work, honesty, and integrity. When I moved to Phoenix in 1997, I quickly learned that those same values weren't as common in the big city.

I started to see all the shortcuts that the food industry takes. The commercialization of the farm was really evident when I would drive by miles of dusty feed lots right off the highway. I learned of all the hormones and steroids and antibiotics that the cattle were given and the animal byproducts that they were fed, not to mention the inhumane conditions they were raised in.

In 2005 my wife and I were blessed with our first child Carli. Then in 2007 we were blessed again with our son, Caden. Something happens when you become a parent. It's no longer all about you, it's about your kids and doing what is right for them. One thing I knew for sure was I didn't want them eating the normal processed food or conventionally raised meats that are at the typical supermarket.

Trying to find organic natural food in the desert is tough. The farmers markets are great, but the selection can be hit and miss. Spending my Saturday dragging kids around in 110 degree heat wasn't my idea of fun (or theirs). The closest Whole Foods was 30 minutes away, and their selection was often disappointing. I knew there had to be a better way.

In 2009 I started Topline Foods with my good friend Tom. Our mission was simple, to bring the best naturally raised meats directly to people's homes at a fair and reasonable price, and make it convenient for them. As you review our site, I hope you find that we have accomplished that. We'd love for you to give us a try, we'd be honored to serve you!
