In the early 1950's, Hilton Meigs of Tyler Texas made what many consider the perfect barbecue pit. He designed and manufactured a cast aluminum grill and smoker calling it the Portable Kitchen and sold it around the mid-south out of the back of his car. In 1960 the company was bought by Lewis Hamlin and manufacturing moved to Little Rock, Arkansas where it remained until a fire and business issues stopped production in the mid-1970's. The somewhat legendary durability of this grill ensured that thousands of them still existed in perfect working order by the end of the 1990's when a local attorney found one in Little Rock, AR.

In 1998, grill enthusiast Paul James discovered a Portable Kitchen Grill and Smoker at a yard sale. His interest sparked, he purchased the Portable Kitchen name from Char-Broil and began producing sparkling new aluminum PK grills from castings of the original product. After a twenty year hiatus, PK was back in business in Little Rock. Over 60 years since its inception, the grills today are nearly identical to the one Hilton Meigs made all those years ago.

QMT Windchimes? is the premier domestic manufacturer of high quality, hand-tuned wind chimes. Our handmade windchimes ship from our factory in Manassas Park, Virginia. We understand that our success is dependent upon the success of our retail partners, so we strive to build the best quality wind chimes on the market. We pride ourselves in supporting our retail partners with highest quality wind chimes and outstanding customer service. Watch our intro video below to learn more about what makes windchimes by QMT the best on the market.

QMT WindchimesTM originated in the Florida craft show circuit in the early 80's. Mike Throne camped in the back of his van and traveled to craft shows selling different products, including wind chimes from a local producer. When his source for chimes dried up, Mike began to build his own handmade wind chimes, with an eye toward quality and continually improving his designs. Working during the week in a 10' x 20' warehouse, he produced the chimes that would be sold on the weekend. Mike was determined to offer the buying public a chime that was as beautiful to see as it was to hear. And it worked, the demand for his windchimes soon overwhelmed his ability to make them himself. So he took a deep breath and became a young entrepreneur following the American dream. He hired his first employees, found our facility in Manassas Park and set down roots in the community to produce quality handmade windchimes for wholesale trade shows.

Arias? was the first line of wind chimes he created, soon followed by Weatherland?. QMT WindchimesTM continued to grow in numbers of chimes produced and in the number of lines offered. The introduction of Corinthian Bells?, the first in the next generation of windchimes, created an astonishing excitement among retailers in the gift and garden industries. Corinthian Bells? are the ultimate wind chimes on the market today, the exceptional tones and resonances and the contemporary design stay true to Mike's original desire to offer quality chimes that were pleasing to all the senses. QMT WindchimesTM offers a wide selection of quality chimes, birdhouses and birdfeeders, each handmade with the same care and attention as the original.

In the spring of 2005, Mike chose his successor, Jamie Baisden, who shared Mike's vision for QMT. Since Jamie's purchase of QMT in 2006, QMT has continued to move forward as a domestic producer committed to its employees, customers and community. Over the past five years, QMT WindchimesTM has introduced the Shenandoah Melodies? line, the new Arias? Elite line and three new sizes in the Corinthian Bells? line. All have been well received by our customers and continue to gain in popularity. Our newest brands include In Loving Memory? Windchimes and For the Girls? Windchimes. Our In Loving Memory? chimes are engraved with inspirational verses and make a great memorial gift. The For The Girls? brand was created as a way to support loved ones and raise funds for breast cancer research. We are continuing to move forward with new sounds and designs, while maintaining the standards of excellence and innovation on which the company was built.

Thanks for visiting our online store.

We are the only blacksmith in the United States specializing in hand forged garden tools for home gardeners, nurserymen, landscapers, and farmers.

We've been producing hand-forged implements for over 15 years. Bob is a tool designer, inventor, and frequent writer on various gardening topics and Rita is your contact in the store and online. We are new to the internet, but have years of experience operating the retail store. We started off in California in the late 1980's, and relocated to Oregon in 2004.

We operate out of a two story barn that Bob built out of the lumber from two 100-year old Oregon barns. The store is fantastic — in the summer it's cool and bright, and in the winter you can warm your feet at the pot belly stove.

We offer more than 1000 items at the store, and have at least 20 different patterns of hoes; steel rakes ranging from 6 tines to 24 tines; one to five-tine cultivators; ball weeders; hand plows; rock picking forks, root hooks; cradle forks for overhead pitching; mangel cutters; weed spuds; wood tine rakes; hot bed weeders and hundreds of other unique or rare implements.

We also offer sharpening of non-power pruning and other edged tools, re-handling, restoration, repair and custom tool making.

More about Bob

Read Tips and Topics on gardening articles
Bob is a frequent speaker at garden club events and conventions on various gardening topics. If you're interested in having Bob talk at one of your club meetings, or if you want to attend a class at our store, just give us a call.

Bob has been a contributor to Fine Gardening and Horticulture magazines. His articles have also appeared in Small Farm Today and New Pioneer Magazine.

Bob is also an inventor and has invented several items, including: garden pants with built-in knee pads; forged, solid socket trench clean out shovels with flat bottoms and turned-up sides; a combination diamond file, screw driver and multi-wrench for tool maintenance; pruning tool maintenance oil; an improved ball weeder; a heavy duty watering wand, a line of hand tools with screw-on handles, a root saw, a potting trowel and a blackberry hoe.

Formerly, Bob was a product development consultant to Corona Clipper Company, America’s leading manufacturer of professional pruning tools. He provided specifications, conceptual designs, field-testing and evaluation for Corona’s new generation of hand shears, loppers and hedge shears. He played a critical role in developing Corona’s complete range of garden, landscape, agricultural and construction hand tools when the company expanded its offerings in the early 2000’s.

Bob and Rita have been the subject of many magazines such as Horticulture, Sunset, Garden Design, and the Los Angeles Times Magazine. In 2005 they were the subjects of a segment on PAX television’s People Places and Plants program. He also appears regularly on Saturday morning's Garden Time TV.

He is a frequent and popular lecturer at botanical gardens, arboreta, garden clubs, plant societies and garden shows.

Prior to founding Red Pig Tools (formerly Denman and Company) in 1989, Bob and Rita operated an advertising and graphic design studio. A former journalist, college football linebacker and motocross rider, Bob now confines his physical activities to the smithy and the garden, feeling that there is danger and excitement enough at home.

eshop at Richardson Seating's web store for Made in America products
One of the products Richardson Seating sells is Made in America Outdoor Table Bases. A more complete list of their products is provided by Made in America Secrets, to review their list click here.

For more information about Richardson Seating and its American Made products see the following:

Richardson Seating Corporation manufactures logo bar stools, restaurant bar stools, diner chairs, counter stools, table bases, residential furniture, and retro diner furniture. Our 75,000 square foot manufacturing plant is located in Chicago, Illinois. We are a Chicago based bar stool manufacturer.

Although Richardson Seating was founded in 1975, its history and product line goes back much further. After the end of WWII, Richardson Seating's founder, Harry Richardson returned from active duty to his hometown of Chicago, IL. Around 1950 Harry decided to start a furniture manufacturing company. Harry recruited his brother Rueben and his father to form his family's first bar stool and chair manufacturing company. This company (which is still in business today and a current customer of Richardson) specialized in commercial chairs and commercial bar stools for the foodservice industry. Harry sold his first company in 1973 with plans of retiring.

A few years later, Harry was not satisfied with retirement and decided to start a new commercial furniture company with his son in law Earl Lichtenstein. Harry decided to name this one after his family and called it Richardson Seating Corporation. Like its predecessor, Richardson Seating specialized in manufacturing bar stools, counter stools, and other retro diner furniture.
