Charlie Sutherland Sr. rarely did anything without a purpose in mind. But even he couldn't foresee what would come to pass when he stood in front of our North First Avenue building all those many years ago. In the photo at right, as he stares at the old Mayodan, N.C., fireman's dance hall that he had plans to turn into an oil manufacturing facility, you can just about see his wheels turning. And turn they did. From 1976 until his passing in 1994, Charlie Sr. left his mark on this company: a legacy of dedication to excellence with a personal touch.

Charlie JrCharlie Sutherland Jr.
Charlie Sr. is most certainly the Charlie of Charlie's Soap, but his son, Charlie Jr., actually created first the oils and then the cleaner that would come to be known as Charlie's Soap. While you may not be able to see the wheels turning in this photo (some prefer to think of it as a screw loose), you cannot deny the gumption of a man who, on his wife Jane's birthday in 1983, quit his day job and took over the small company that had little chance for success.

Through scrimping and saving, a little blood and a whole lot of luck, people were finding out about us and starting to ask where they could pick up some of Charlie's soap. It had grown beyond an industrial cleaner for machines and textile quality control, people were taking it home and using for literally everything from false teeth to diesel engines.

By 2002, Charlie Jr.'s boys joined the cause and started the long-overdue process of officially branding the product as Charlie's Soap. They took their grandparents' ideals, their father's guts, their own dreams and experiences and turned a small-town shop into a world-class business with product sold to 50 states and 50 countries. So, we must be doing something right!

If our grandparents could see what we've become, I'd like to think they would be proud. H.C. Amick Sr. (grandfather on our mother's side and financial guru) would certainly remind us of his motto, With patience and perseverance, you will prevail. Charlie Sr. would probably shout his infamous rhetorical question, What difference does it make?!

We'd like you to know we truly love what we do. We love the way our products look and feel and smell. We love the way they clean so well. We love how safe our products are for the people who use them and for the earth. And we love the way our customers share our enthusiasm for our unique products. We are truly a company that feels passionately about our business.

And we appreciate having this opportunity to share with you the story of our company, how we came to be, and what we value. I hope you'll find our story so compelling you say, Now that's the kind of company I want to do business with.

The idea that started ChemFree Solutions originated with the experience of a Co-Founder who had a company restoring tile in showers and tubs. One of the problems they frequently encountered was mold and mildew on stone, grout, and concrete. Like most, they tried chlorine bleach, but the crews couldn't breathe because of the toxic fumes, and our customers complained of the mold kept returning. There had to be a better way.

Through research, development, and testing the answer was found ? enzyme-based cleaners that were not only more effective at removing mold, but the mold didn't return as quickly. Plus, those toxic fumes were gone. Through continued testing, enzyme-based cleaners proved to be the most effective solution for a very wide range of cleaning problems. Enzymes truly are a new and better way to clean because they are not only safe, but the most effective cleaner technology they had ever used.

So we looked to the marketplace and found enzyme cleaners were being used for commercial and industrial jobs, including such diverse tasks as: cleaning up large oil spills, carpet cleaning, greasy restaurant kitchens, and cleaning surgical instruments before sterilization. For consumers though, there were few real choices.

Our next challenge was to find the best combination of enzymes to clean various tasks. Since enzymes are very targeted we needed an amalgamation of different enzymes to tackle the very disparate cleaning tasks. With one exception, Stain Erasers and Laundry, all of our products have unique recipes, focused on the cleaning task. We were rewarded by finding not only the best enzyme solutions, but the highest grade of enzymes, hospital grade enzymes. Our source for the enzymes is a leading supplier of enzymes for cleaning surgical equipment in the U.S. They meet all of the exacting requirements hospitals have for purity and safety.

In the end, our story is not complete without satisfied customers. We are committed to bringing you the best products and if you are ever disappointed, please give us a call and we will strive to make sure your experience with our products is a good one.

Thank you for your support of a small company that is committed to having 100% of our product made in America.

For more information about Dr Bronners Soap and its Made in the USA products see the following:

Dr. Bronner's Magic Soaps are synonymous with Old World quality and time-honored simplicity, which can be traced back to the family's German-Jewish soapmaking tradition. Born in 1908 to a Jewish family that had been making soap since 1858, Emanuel Bronner was the third generation certified as a master soapmaker under the guild system of the time. In 1929, he brought his formulas for high-quality liquid and bar soaps to America, starting Dr. Bronner's Magic Soaps in its current form in 1948.
Our soaps, renowned for their quality, versatility and eco-friendliness, enjoyed a small but loyal following in the early years. In the late 1960s, however, soap sales started to explode, due to the unsurpassed ecological quality combined with Emanuel Bronner's urgent message to realize our transcendent unity across religious and ethnic divides. Word-of-mouth soon made Dr. Bronner's the iconic soap of that era, and in the decades that followed the soaps spread into every health food store in the U.S. and then into the mainstream as well ? winning over fans from all walks of life on the way to becoming the number-one-selling brand of natural soaps in North America.
The 4th and 5th generations of the Bronner family who run the company today continue to make our unsurpassed soaps with care and integrity. 2008 marked both the 60th anniversary of Dr. Bronner's Magic Soaps in America and the 150th anniversary of our family's first soapmaking activity in southern Germany.
Today, Dr. Bronner's continues its mission and commitment to building an engine for promoting and advancing positive social change. From pioneering USDA certified organic personal care products, to creating Fair Trade projects across the world that ensure fair and just treatment of farmers and workers, to creating a socially responsible workplace here in the U.S., we strive to honor our heritage with progressive business practices, while devoting profits to worthwhile causes and charities worldwide.
