The OlovesM Story-

I was on my yoga mat in downward dog when the idea for my bags popped into my head! Yes, I know I should have been OMing out - but for me, yoga class can sometimes be the best place for me to Think, Create, Design. That idea lead to a TON of research, exciting adventures, and tons of stories.

Our bags are mostly made from new yoga mats that were over produced, or that studios or stores could not use. The fabrics we use are either over-runs, seconds, ends of rolls, or USA-made, which is very exciting! Even the straps for our bags comes from the webbing left over when a sandal company sold its business.

Oh, the name -- it has a few meanings, which are all part of the story! OM is what you chant in yoga, and since I was in class when the idea popped into my head - it seemed perfect! Plus, my husband's nickname is OB, so OB loves Merle, and finally, OM are my initials backwards! It all made sense to me -- so I went with it:)

Have fun checking out our bags, and most of all remember to-

Smile, Smile, Smile

Merle:)

Upon graduation from New York University, I bought a one-way ticket to San Francisco to discover a new city and to start a new life. My parents had done the same almost 50 years ago when they immigrated to the United States from the Philippines. You could say it is from them that I learned how to be entrepreneurial.

Prior to children, I spent nearly six years doing public relations, marketing, and branding for a San Francisco design firm. While I always wanted to have a family, I also wanted to return to the workforce but only on my own terms. Starting my own business seemed like the best way to accomplish both goals. The next challenge was to define what kind of business.

As is true for most parents, my children consumed my life, and what I discovered were all kinds of baby products that worked and many that didn't work. When my first child Patrick was born, I found the small rectangular shape of diaper changing pads frustrating because aligning him in the right position was always a challenge?particularly since he was a rather wiggly baby. Even more annoying was the design of the folding/rolling pad that had ties, buttons, or even Velcro?. I needed something simple that could fold easily - especially with one hand.

When my second child Emma was born, I, like most parents today, was always on the go and found my diaper bag overwhelming at times?especially for quick trips to the grocery store or a visit to the park. For these short jaunts, I only needed a few diapers, wipes, perhaps a change of clothes and a changing pad. Plus, I wanted something small and compact that I could throw in my car, handbag or even at the bottom of my stroller.

Emma was eighteen months old when I started to consider how to return to the work force. I was discussing ideas for businesses with my sister, when Emma needed a diaper change. My sister had been suggesting that a good business solves a problem. In the time it took to change Emma, I found my business venture: a round diaper changing pad.

I founded patemm inc in 2004, and named my invention after my first two kids who inspired the product: Patrick and Emma. My company and my family have grown since then, but the passion that inspires the company remains the same: my children, Patrick, Emma, Jack, and Lucie, and my husband Marty. The patemm? pad has received numerous awards and accolades for its unique design, convenience and style. As an American family, we have and always will be committed to manufacturing our products in the USA!

Pax means Peace in Latin.

The Name Pax4u was chosen with this main mission in mind ? to provide customers more peaceful lifestyles through comfort in bags and apparel while focusing on being an ecologically responsible company. Pax4u uses eco-friendly fabrics and reclaimed leather and suede in all of our products to ensure the safety of farmers and the future of the environment.

Why Go Green?

To Be Mindful. We at Pax4u recognize the need to balance quality and eco-conscious living. This is why Pax4u designs and manufactures stylish earth friendly bags using certified organic cotton and/or eco-friendly fabrics. All of our leather bags are cut and sewn from reclaimed leather and suede. Pax4u spares rolls of brand new seat belt webbing (that didn't pass strict safety standards for automobile use) from a landfill by re-purposing it into sturdy convertible bag straps. In keeping with a commitment to a healthy planet, we maintain the utmost in responsible business practices while preserving the environment for future generations. Being green is part of every decision we make.

To Choose Organic. Conventionally grown cotton (more that 99% of the world's cotton supply) has significant negative impacts on the environment and on human health, primarily due to toxic chemical use. As a result, consumers are exposed to them daily in the food they eat, the water they drink, the air and dust they breathe, as well as on surfaces inside their homes and at work, and in public places.

Because organic cotton is grown without the use of harmful pesticides, chemicals, and fertilizers - supporting organic cotton is a great way to promote more sustainable and healthy environmental practices and preserve air and water quality. Organic farming is part of the solution to reduce reliance on potentially dangerous pesticides and fertilizers highly dependent on oil and natural gas for their production. Supporting organic farmers, no matter where they are on the planet, helps to take care of our water and soil resources.

Made in the USA. Indiana to be specific. Whenever possible, organic and recycled materials are sourced and manufactured locally. Being green means we look to our closest neighbors first when we purchase materials and hire sewers to helps us meet our growing demand. In two common-sense decisions we reduce global greenhouse emissions and create local jobs. With an eye to recycle materials, we scour the market for supple leather and suede on the racks of resale and consignment businesses. The coat or pant styles we find may never come back but the fabric is divine. Our expert designers clean and hand-cut the leather and suede to give every Pax4u Leather Solo or Mini bag a unique look and timeless quality.

Our Story
Hip Bag

Several years ago, co-founder Janet Sharp-Freedman and her family were visiting Africa on a vacation. Prone to back trouble, Janet found it uncomfortable to carry a purse while exploring South Africa. The added weight on her shoulders made it difficult to carry her children or any additional items purchased along the way. One afternoon, while walking through a local market, Janet spotted a woman wearing a bag around her hips that was unlike anything she had seen before. It was more than a fanny pack, less than a backpack and left her hands completely free. While much more basic in design, Janet realized that a more fashionable, higher quality bag utilizing the same core concept could dramatically improve her life and others. Drawing on her background in biomechanics and kinesiology, Janet went home and designed a bag for herself and later for her friends with similar needs. Throughout the years, demand for this new, innovative bag was more than she ever anticipated and thus, Pax4u was born.
