Back To Blocks is a family owned and operated business located in Kaysville, Utah, U.S.A. We handcraft and sell wooden building blocks for children. Here's a little bit about who we are and what our business is all about.

BUILDING A BUSINESS ONE BLOCK AT A TIME

In 2010 we (Miriam and Craig Sheffield) made a set of wooden building blocks for our grandson. We had made wooden blocks for our own children when they were young and wanted to share this fun family toy with the next generation. That Christmas we also made a set for a neighbor who has 3 little boys. The day after Christmas, the neighbor commented that the only toy her kids wanted to play with on Christmas, was that set of wooden toy blocks. The Sheffield's son found his child loved the blocks too and he suggested that they look into making some of these sets to sell. Starting a business had never been in our plans, but with a little encouragement and a lot of research, the journey began to becomeBack To Blocks.

This was a family effort involving all five of their children. Each one helped with some aspect- marketing, engineering, logo design, planning and production. We even had a lively family discussion over possible business names.

It all started in a wood shop in the garage. We experimented with different species of wood, different shapes, sizes and styles of wooden blocks sets and by summer 2011 we were ready to launch a business. Soon the business moved to a shop and the blocks started to stack up.

As we started to develop our products there were 3 key items that were important to us. Our product had to be natural, it had to have make-sense packaging, and most of all it had to be affordable and contain enough blocks that kids love playing with them.

Our grandson who received the blocks was only 1year old at the time. So we knew that these would most likely end up in his mouth. So we knew our product had to be natural and safe. We didn't want to include any paints or dyes or coatings that could be potentially be toxic. We frequently have parents email us asking if our products contain any toxins. The answer to that question is no, never, nothing but plain, natural hardwoods are used in any of our products.

Another important consideration was to have a make -sense packaging. Many block sets are sold in a crate where they have to be put away in a certain order. Often it is mom who then has to put them away. This can discourage moms from wanting a great educational toy like blocks. So our storage container had to be mom and kid friendly. Blocks are a toy that you want to dump out and so clean up had to be easy. The buckets we use are bright colored, easy to open and kids can just throw the blocks in when they are done. Moms are always commenting how much they love the buckets.

The final consideration, and probably the most important, was to provide a lot of blocks for an affordable price. As we did research on block sets we found that many block sets contain few blocks or larger sets are so highly priced they are unaffordable for many families. Children will quickly become disinterested in a small block set that limits their creativity, or doesn't one have enough to share. We feel strongly that blocks are an essential educational toy and that every home should have a set of blocks. So we set out to make this possible for families on all budgets. Our business motto soon became We provide a lot of blocks, in a bucket, at an affordable price.

We feel as our world grows increasingly high-tech, many children are not developing their natural creativity. So many toys today are entertaining, with batteries, bells, and whistles, but are children able to creatively play with them? Even building sets like LEGOs usually come in a specific set with detailed instructions on how to build a certain item. Yes, kids love building them, but have we eliminated their ability to create, think, even learn how to problem solve? Wooden blocks are the perfect toy for building on children's natural creative abilities. Every family or classroom should own a set of BLOCKS!!!

We are committed to providing a safe, durable, natural, quality product. Our blocks are made from natural hardwood and have no paints, dyes or stains. We use poplar, a beautiful hardwood that comes naturally in a variety of color variations. It can range from white to greenish to purple. It is light, sturdy, and affordable.

Our blocks have been tested and meet all safety requirements for children's products, in accordance with ASTM 963-08, as required by the CPSIA. We guarantee our products and will replace any of our wooden building blocks that crack or split through normal use.

We want to provide these natural wooden blocks for you and your family or classroom. So turn off the TV and video games, dump out the bucket, and watch the creativity begin! Spend time creating with your child and remember what fun you had as a child with blocks just like these VINTAGE WOODEN BLOCKS!!!

Our wooden items are constructed by craftspeople that specialize in woodworking. High quality hardwoods like cherry, maple and walnut are prefered, as these woods are beautiful, durable and impart a sense of warmth and comfort. Our difference is in the details. Our craftspeople take extra effort to create smooth, softened edges on all of our wood products.
Camden Rose is proud to support two fair trade, non-profit organizations outside of Lima, Peru. Hearing impaired women are employed in one cooperative, disadvantaged women in another. It warms our hearts to know the lives we have impacted there has provided the women a livelihood. We feel a great sense of obligation to support and grow this relationship.
With production in both the US and in Peru, we have experienced significant change over the past couple of years with price increases due to limited availability of raw materials. In the US, the cost of various hardwoods has greatly increased - along with the demand for theses wood overseas. Camden Rose continues to be a part of the movement to create a market for items made in the US at fair, competitive prices.
Materials
Besides making quality items to last generations, our desire is to only use natural materials such as wood, silk, wool or cotton. Natural materials are not indestructible, however, wood, silk, wool and cotton are non-toxic, renewable, have a natural quality of warmth, and do not impart a false impression of weight, mass or touch.

Wooden Building Blocks tend to start out as the child's first building experience, with lots of choices and nobody to tell them they aren't doing it correctly. This makes it more fun and entertaining for the child and even the parents.

The first thing they do is simply stack them one on top of each other, as tall as they can. Then either they fall on their own or the child knocks them over with the biggest smile or laughter. This is exciting to watch and remember for a lifetime.

The second is they start to build something that only their imagination and ingenuity understands. This is the age that we all would like to maybe relive, when we had no cares in the world, and we could do (at least we thought we could) anything we dared.

As they continue to build to the diagrams in their minds, they start to learn relationships about the blocks. This is a size/color relationship where we call them a unit building system and the color is given to a block based on the length of the block.

All of the building blocks in the set have the following parameters.
1. There are either rectangular solids or cylinders.
2. A unit building system is where all blocks in the set have one (1) dimension in common. It is the
thickness of the rectangular solid or the diameter of the cylinder. They all equal the Unit 1
and all the other dimensions are a multiple of the unit thickness.
3. There are varying widths for the rectangular solids 1, 2, 3, or 4 units. This does vary between
blocks, because you can't have a width wider than the length of the block.
4. There are varying lengths, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, & 10 in both rectangular solids and the
cylinders.
5. The length determines the color.

NOW with these parameters in mind, DO NOT tell the child these facts. They will learn on their own through trial and error. This will be a good learning experience, as when they discover relationships on their own, they will feel a great sense of accomplishment, and self-reward. This also helps build confidence, and self esteem.

As the child continues to build, they learn that if they use a particular color to make a wall (or similar item) by standing all of those particular colored blocks on end, that they are the same height. When they run out, they start to substitute other colors and find none are exactly the same. So they start to combine multiple blocks of different colors or combinations there of to equal the same height of the original color. I hope you see where this is leading.

Once the child learns some of these relationships over and over, they will use the concept they have learned to build more exacting and with much more precision.

Educationally, we have now gotten to where schools and teachers take over. These relationships of the building system are really nothing more than mathematical relationships. Substitution of a number for a color can be a simple process for adding and subtracting.

But our educationally structured Wooden Building Block Systems go much further than simple adding and subtracting. You can multiply and divide equally as well. I will also tell you we can prove Pythagorean's Theorem which is expressed as, C2 = A2 + B2, and taught in plane geometry classes in middle or high school grades. We have taken D and E students and within 20 to 30 minutes the student grasped the concept so well that by not contacting the student for an entire year, then confronting them with the problem of proving Pythagorean's Theorem, they proceed to do so as if it were yesterday that it was explained. Mind you, there is one key ingredient here that I must point out, the student had to want to learn. It can be shown by many good educators that a good teacher is one who has the ability to create an environment where a student wants to learn. This can even be said about a parent who try's to provide for their children the best educational toys they can, to create an environment for them to learn as much as possible.
